"A rabbit hole of a movie, inviting viewers on a dizzying plunge through love, loss and, finally, consciousness itself ... the perfect movie about love's inevitable imperfections." - Ann Hornaday, THE WASHINGTON POST

From filmmaker Michel Gondry and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman comes this unconventional, one-of-a-kind romance that's equally abstract, inventive, and hilarious.
Like Kaufman's scripts for ADAPTATION and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, this plot works off of a relatively complex idea that is more easily explained through the language of film than through words.
Joel (Jim Carrey) is undergoing a sci fi-tinged medical procedure to erase the memory of his ex-girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). However, while he is unconscious and the procedure is underway, he takes a journey through his mind, reliving moments with Clementine for fear of losing her forever. Using disjointed sound and action, foggy periods indicating Joel's confusion, and flashbacks to childhood where objects appear much bigger than they are to adult eyes, the cinematography communicates Joel's emotional dilemma with visual panache. Emotionally complicated and wonderfully romantic, the film is also laugh-out-loud funny, growing more deeply and darkly amusing as the absurdity of the situation increases.
Winner of the Best Original Screenplay Oscar in 2005, ETERNAL SUNSHINE also boasts brilliant direction by Michel Gondry, stellar performances by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, great supporting performances by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Tom Wilkinson and Mark Ruffalo, a moving score by Jon Brion and a peppy soundtrack featuring songs by E.L.O. and the Polyphonic Spree.
