Join us for a special Day of the Dead screening of director Roberto Gavaldón’s 1960 Mexican classic, MACARIO.
This beloved fantasy, based on a story by B. Travern (author of Treasure of the Sierra Madre), was the first Mexican film ever nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. It tells the fable-like story of a poor, hungry Mexican woodcutter who happens upon a turkey dinner, to be enjoyed all by himself, one Day of the Dead. But before he can enjoy his feast, he is joined by three uninvited guests -- God, the Devil and Death -- who want to share in his windfall.
Full of lyrical symbolism and infused with a strong social message, the film opts for a combination of naturalism and surrealism, resulting in a visually dense and dramatically powerful experience. While the film’s structure is somewhat reminiscent of such art house classics as Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal and William Dieterle’s The Devil and Daniel Webster, the movie is ultimately in a unique class unto itself. Dazzling camera work, propelled by luminous black and white images created by famed cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa (nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar for 1964's Night of the Iguana), help to weave a magical atmosphere that has made MACARIO a timeless classic.
